About This Spot

Stepping into Astana Restaurant feels like crossing an inviting threshold into a quiet, warmly lit corner of Central Asia nestled in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. The pace here is unhurried, where the hum of friendly conversation mingles gently with the understated clink of glassware—a calm retreat from the city’s bustle. It’s a place that welcomes you with simple sincerity, not spectacle, inviting guests to settle in with a sense of ease and quiet anticipation.

The atmosphere is comfortable and unpretentious, where attentive staff add a personal touch without ever rushing your experience. There’s a feeling of genuine hospitality, one that mirrors the spirit of the Kazakh and Russian heritage it presents on the table. This is the kind of spot where meals unfold naturally—meant to be savored and shared.

The cuisine here is an invitation to explore traditions that are both rich and nuanced. The flavors come alive in thoughtfully prepared dishes that balance heartiness with finesse. Whether it’s the tender skewers that hold smoky, meaty depth or the aromatic, comforting soups and stews, the food tells stories of family, warmth, and shared moments around the table. There’s also a delightful warmth in the way ingredients like honey or peach cookies surface gently, offering irregular but memorable notes that surprise and comfort in equal measure.

This restaurant is not just a place for a meal but a quiet discovery—a chance to connect with a culture through food that feels lovingly preserved and presented. It’s ideal for those curious about the tastes of Kazakhstan and Russia, as well as for anyone seeking a pleasant hideaway for casual dining or special gatherings that linger long after the last plate is cleared.

Astana’s charm lies in its ability to make you feel at home away from home, where every visit seems to quietly promise a little warmth, a little familiarity, and the joy of coming back to something genuine.

I’ve never tried Kazasthan food before and enjoyed it very much here. There’s a nice variety on the menu. The appetizer of brinjal in sweet chili sauce and cream cheese was excellent and easily our favorite. We also ordered mutton and chicken skewers which were so tender and flavorful. The beef with potatoes on the side and soup dumplings were good as well. Service was fine and the ambiance is simple and lovely. Great way to try out Kazakh food.

Five stars, easily. You can take the Russian girl out of Russia, but you can’t take Russia out of the girl - and Astana Restaurant absolutely delivered. All the way from Australia to Malaysia, and somehow I ended up right back at a table that felt like home. We walked in on New Year’s Eve (already expecting a polite “sorry, fully booked”), but instead we were welcomed in and the team genuinely made sure we could try as much as possible and have a great experience. That alone says a lot. The food was spot on. Manty just as they should be - comforting, juicy, and familiar. Fried potatoes done the proper way, Olivier salad that tasted exactly like it should, real kvas, perfectly cooked shashlik, and desserts to finish. Every dish felt authentic, not adapted or watered down - just honest Central Asian/Russian comfort food. In Malaysia, finding this level of authenticity - and this kind of hospitality, especially on New Year’s Eve - felt like a small miracle. If you’re from Russia or the region and feeling homesick, this place will hit straight in the heart. If you’re not, it’s still an experience worth having. Astana Restaurant isn’t just food - it’s warmth, generosity, and a reminder of home.

Highly recommend this restaurant as one of the few excellent Central Asian restaurants in KL. I came primarily for the Horse meat, which was surprisingly delicious—a little gamey, salted, and cured until perfectly tender. The plov was also fantastic and paired well. We ordered the beshbarmak, but the portion size caught us off guard. One serving is enough to feed four people, and it’s a very interesting, meaty dish. The true highlight was dessert: the Medovik is easily the best cake I’ve ever tasted. I will definitely return to try the rest of the menu :)

The ambiance was pleasant and comfortable, making it a great place for both casual dining and special occasions. The staff were friendly and attentive, which made the experience even more enjoyable. Overall, Asana Restaurant offers great food, warm service, and a lovely atmosphere. I would definitely recommend it and look forward to visiting again.

I recently visited this Russian Kazakh cuisine restaurant and it turned out to be a uniquely enjoyable dining experience. The menu offered a wide variety of dishes, and we were fortunate to have a floor manager who was very knowledgeable about the cuisine. He walked us through his country’s specialties and made excellent recommendations, which added a warm and personal touch to the meal. The lamb was especially flavourful, and the plov was hearty and comforting. The dumplings were also enjoyable, slightly different from what I’m used to, with a unique wrapper texture that made them stand out. Some dishes leaned a touch on the oily side for my personal preference, but the flavours still came through nicely. The herbal tea was refreshing with a strong mint profile that helped balance the meal. Overall, it was a great opportunity to explore something new, and I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a cultural culinary experience. And if you’re feeling adventurous, the horse meat is definitely an interesting option to try.

Plov with Kazy is very good, savoury rice and an experience on horse meat sausage. Beshbarmark is akin to flat noodle, serve with beef, beef tongue, and kazy. The broth was pretty good too. Shashlyk Chicken is also well grilled, flavourful with spice and herbs. A must order is the Medovik cake, a traditional honey cake from Russia. Drinks I will highly recommend Kvas, which is a fermented rye bread drink that is refreshing.

Thanks for reading! If this helped you, let me know with a like. Alright, gather 'round, you hungry friends, because we're talking about Astana. Not some gleaming Michelin monstrosity, but a place that just… gets it. Tucked away in Malaysia, a country that already knows a thing or two about flavor, Astana isn't screaming for attention. It just quietly, confidently delivers. Stepping inside, it’s not opulent, it’s comfortable. Like a well-worn leather jacket, or your favorite uncle’s living room where the good stories flow freely. There's an honest warmth to the place, none of that contrived "rustic chic" nonsense. It feels lived-in, loved, and ready to welcome you without judgment. Then there’s the staff. And this, my friends, is where the magic truly begins. I once watched a young waiter, barely out of his teens, navigate a table of indecisive tourists, effortlessly guiding them through the menu’s intricacies. He didn't rush, he didn't condescend; he cared. Like a culinary whisperer, he led them to the Kazakh Plov – a revelation of tender lamb, perfectly cooked rice, and carrots that burst with sweetness. It’s a dish that demands respect, and Astana’s rendition earns it. This kid, he knew the dish, he knew his customers, and he made sure they left happy. That’s not service; that’s hospitality. So, if you’re wandering through Malaysia, tired of the usual suspects, seeking something real, something with soul, find Astana. Order the Plov. Let the staff take care of you. You won’t regret it. It’s good, honest food, served by good, honest people. And in my book, that’s damn near perfect.

My Kazakh friend recommended this spot, and it did NOT disappoint! Stepping into a Russian-Kazakh restaurant felt like a cool cultural journey. ???????????????? First Impressions: The environment is super cozy and feels genuine. I loved the glass window where you can watch the chefs work—such a cool touch! A tiny note: it could be a bit cleaner (our sofa had some leftover crumbs ), but it didn't ruin the vibe. The Horse Meat: Its interesting~ It was lean, not tough at all, and had no weird taste. Just high-quality, delicious meat. Majorly impressed. The Soup & Noodles: This dish was heartwarming comfort in a bowl~ The soup had a very natural, pure taste without a bunch of extra seasoning or herbs. And the handmade stretch noodles~ The Salad: Fresh, crisp, and the sauce was a decent combination—not too greasy at all! Final Verdict: Nothing was overly "gourmet," and that's the charm! It has that incredible, hearty, home-cooked food feeling. A truly interesting and delicious experience. I will be back to try more dishes~
